Internship

This past summer, I had the opportunity to work as a Legal Secretary intern at Morrison and Foerster Sa Francisco Headquarters. During my internship, I was not only performing various tasks for different departments like Business Corporate, Tax, Litigation, etc.,, I was also interacting with the other college interns to learn from the activities and workshops set up to help us increase our skill sets through  external client services and internal tasks production. At work, I was not just only doing work, I was ejoying the valuable lessons that came with the experiences.

Here are three samples of my weekly logs for this internship:

Week One:

Waking up at 5 a.m. is definitely not a part of my regular daily routine, especially not for the first day of summer. Instead of taking 10 minutes to get dressed like usual, it took me an hour long figure out which was the perfect first day of work outfit. Blazer, no blazer? Business formal or business casual? This was the first real job that I was so scared to even make one little mistake. Stumbling into the lobby as I waited for someone to take me to orientation, I realized I made it to my dream earlier than I expected: walking in the flow of people in San Francisco as I step into a building with high tech security and spectacular views all around the city. While spending most of my first day through orientation, I also had the chance to meet my fellow interns who started before me as well as familiarizing myself with my desk space and the whole building. As a part of the company’s protocol, I also attended “Safety and Security Tour tour and computer training customized to the company’s systems. As the first week went by, I started to gain more work as more people got to know me. There were times where I learned how to properly file documents physically and electronically, while other times when I partnered up with the Trademark group to do a project. I think that one thing that separates this internship program from anything I’ve seen is the incorporation of workshops for intern. In particular, the interns and I all attended the first workshop of the summer: “Client Service: The Big Picture”.

Week Four:

Half of my internship has passed. In the past little few weeks, I have gained so much knowledge and understandings about the world of law and what it really means to be have a career. It scared me before not knowing how to apply the things I’ve learned in school to a real career. But now, I know what’s ahead of me, and I know how to deal with certain situations at work and how to educate myself at work to complete tasks that I did not know how to do before. Through this week’s work, I was able to interconnect with people that many lawyers at Morrison and Foerster work with through a project using a website where I can find career information from employment to education to awards for each individual. Another project that I have been working at for the last few weeks include putting together table of content set for binders and binders of information. Although I thought this would be way easier, this was definitely time-consuming and something that I needed a lot of help with. It wasn’t the ordinary table of contents. As it turned out, there were so many vocabulary words from even just the table of contents that I had to figure out. While working this week, I was also working with two of my fellow interns to complete a presentation for the client services workshops we have been going to since the beginning of our internships. Similar to ACLC, my schedule at work depends on how I want to spend it. I love how I can schedule finishing a few projects in the morning while focusing on finishing the presentation during my early afternoon. What makes it even better is being able to book a conference room with an amazing view as my partners and I shoot a video clip for the presentation. This kind of work environment and conditions definitely effectively boosts an employee’s happiness at work just like mine.

Week Eight:

Throughout the whole summer, there have been endless lessons I have educated myself during this internship. With working for different departments and people at this company, I have seen the generosity at Morrison and Foerster and their willingness to help the community. In doing so, my experience ended with one of the greatest opportunity: working for one of the greatest senior partners at the company who many trial lawyers consider as an influential person in court. Although working for this partner was more fast-paced than I have done before, it was a challenge that I wanted to take. While reorganizing all the cabinets and storage rooms that this partner had, I discovered so many different cases, each with a unique story, that I was in awed with. Because of this specific partner and my experience throughout the whole summer at Morrison and Foerster, I have decide to open a possible career path in law, because I, too, want to help people like the lawyers I met through my internship.
